Tonehammer Cylindrum KONTAKT DVDR-DYNAMiCS
The Cylindrum is a massive tuned percussion instrument designed using the principle of open and closed air column resonance. The instrument was constructed by Gregg Stephens with the help some rather involved mathematics, plenty of elbow grease and quite a few bloody fingers. The end result is a massive 20-foot-long tuned percussion instrument with a pitch range spanning a full 4 octaves. Overall, it sounds like a strange organic synthesizer coupled with tuned tom toms. And with deeply nuanced dynamic velocity layering and extensive round-robin variation, this instrument is truly an experimental percussionist's dream come true.

Our Cylindrum library contains three separate variations of the instrument (dry small, dry fat and wet). The small set is made from a series of 1-inch diameter PVC water pipes played by tapping fingers over one end, with a microphone positioned at the far end. The fat version is made from a series of 4-inch ABS corrugated plastic tubes with an open-ended rubber port hole, played with a ping ping paddle. Both sets were recorded in a dry studio room, giving them a full, resonant and fat tonality perfect for arpeggiated melodies and driving bass lines. The wet version is built from 3-inch ABS corrugated plastic tubes with felt mallets on a a 3/8? heavy rubber cap, recorded in an ultra-wide stereo array in a lush glass and tile hall. This slightly more distant sound and closed port delivers a much more brutal transient impact perfect for dramatic scoring and layer with other traditional percussion.

Tonehammer Old Busted Granny Piano KONTAKT DVDR-DYNAMiCS
The Old Busted Granny Piano is pretty special to us, though it doesn't sound all that fancy. Actually, it sounds pretty damn rough around the edges, but that’s just the way we like her. Sure, there are plenty of other great upright piano libraries out there, with their shining lacquer and pristine strings, but none of them ever captured the authentic beauty of a cheap, dusty, beat up, rusting, long untuned upright piano. This is the kind of old heap your grandma had in her living room. This particular instrument has been in Soundiron co-founder Chris Marshall’s family for many years, before being passed on from one new home to the next. This was also one of the very first instruments Mike Peaslee deep-sampled. We don't know the brand or model off hand, but she looked to be about 60 or 70 years old and quite beat up the last time we saw her.

Her tone is watery and faded. There are a number of broken and dissonant strings, especially in the upper register. The wood is pitted, faded and banged up and the ivory is missing from a number of keys. Every key lands with a loud, wobbly, wooden thud and and lifted with a hollow rattle as soon as you lift your finger again. Sometimes, she seems creak and groan in the middle of the night, for no reason at all really. Clearly, the years have not been kind to her looks or her voice, but the soul of this old upright piano truly has aged like a fine moonshine.

We captured 3-4 velocity layers on all keys, with added round-robin variation on the two middle octaves in the mf range.There are actually two independent release trigger samples for every note to better replicate the natural behavior of the instrument as we recorded it. Each note has separate string release samples and key release samples.The "key” release trigger is the soft, distant sounding mechanical wooden "thud” that naturally occurs whenever any key is lifted, even after the resonance has faded. The piano was so old and rickety that you'd have to very slowly releases the sustain pedal or all of the hammers come crashing back down on the strings and occasionally even get stuck there if you lifted your foot too quickly.

Originally recorded in 2006 and released by Tonehammer in 2008, this library has become a classic, finding its way into an endless roster of soundtracks, trailers, commercials and records. For this brand new 2.1 version of our Granny Piano, we’ve tweaked the mapping and layering to make it feel more responsive and natural, combined the "Tuned” and "Untuned” versions into a single preset with an easy Tuning mode switch and implemented our proprietary voice management technology to minimize noise-?oor build-up while maintaining performance. We’ve also incorporated a full range of user controls to allow total sonic shaping. and ?ne control over every detail of the sound. The brand new Geriatrocities atmospheric sustains presets include 12 custom ambiencies that can be blended and shaped freely.
Tonehammer Clack KONTAKT
The theme and purpose of Clack! is pretty simple. We wanted to capture as much sharp, bright, warm, tonal wooden impact percussion as your heart desires. We captured several bamboo poles, bamboo logs, a whole pile of claves, woodblocks, clappers, box drum, and other assorted wooden implements that epitomize the word "thwack." These elements are specifically ideal auxiliary elements for orchestral composition and epic film/tv/game soundtrack scoring. They also are vital elements in Latin music and hip hop, as well as very useful percussion building-blocks and raw source material for experimental music and IDM.

We recorded all of these sets up-close and 90% dry, in a medium-sized hardwood and masonry percussion studio, providing just the right amount of body and liveliness. All presets include a Release knob to allow you to dial in just the right amount of room you need. All instruments were captured with 10 round-robins per velocity layer, with an average of 6 velocity layers per note. The modwheel controls the tightness of room decay in all patches that don't use the modwheel for other purposes, such as cross-fading or swapping between layers. Any patch that has "mw" appended to the nki filename also uses the modwheel for a special function.

We also included 9 unique sets of ambient drones as a bonus. We created them entirely from the original Clack sample source material, using special sound design techniques. These multi-layered sound-scapes utilize the modhweel to allow you to sculpt and morph these ambiences very expressively. The rich flavors of these custom drones range from bright and orchestral, to choral, to thunderous, to quite dark and gritty.

Clack! includes a complete set of custom controls to dial in sounds like never before. By adjusting the attack, you can round out an articulation to a soft, swelling sound. Use the offset feature and cut into the sample removing the harsh transient altogether. Adjust the Release knob to cut the sample down to a mere fraction of a second. All articulations are velocity sensitive and you can use the Swell knob to further sculpt the volume. Each articulation has been tuned to it's dominant frequency and chromatically spread out across the keys allowing this library to serve as both percussion and melody. The stepping knob provides pitch-shifting of ±48 semitones with optional key-switching for ±12 semitones.

Our Tone / FX controls give you access to a number of effects to shape the sounds further. The 3-band EQ gives you ±18db of Low, Mid and High with a fully adjustable Mid Freq. sweep from 20Hz to 20kHz. Other effects include Lo-Fi with adjustable bit-depth and sampling frequency, Flanger, Rotator, Pro-53 Filter, Delay with tempo-synch, Convolution Reverb and a Stereo Modeller. The Uberpeggiator is another powerful feature included in most Percussion and FX patches. It's an advanced arpeggiator allowing control over tempo-synched rhythm timing, number of hits, swing, repeat, pitch, scale and a full 16-step velocity table.
