Difficult Audio RetroSound MK2 KONTAKT
The RetroSound MK100 is a combined synth and drum machine based on the MK100 from the early 80s, lovingly recreated for NI’s Kontakt sampler.

All synth presets can be customised with different waveforms and envelopes in exactly the same way as the hardware, together with the chorus and tremolo effects.

In addition we have the ability to bring Kontakt’s synth engine to bear on the source sounds, so each of the two synth layers can have it’s own independent filter and envelope settings.

All the preset drum patterns and fills are present, as is the Custom Drummer. The drum voices aren’t just limited to the straight preset sounds on the hardware, but can be modified in a number ways - and in addition to the real-time pattern recording from the original, a full graphic step editor lets you edit your patterns, as well as full MIDI keyboard driven operation for real-time jamming and creative sessions.

And the effects page ties it all together with a reverb and delay, and some other output effects to further shape the output - or you can just leave the FX off and use your usual plugins as required.

The MK100 was a little gem of a home keyboard. Unlike it's contemporaries, the stereo-chorus equipped MK100 had 12 standard presets consisting of two layers, and you could customise the waveforms and envelopes each used (the manual proudly proclaimed "1,376 sound possibilities!”). And it actually sounded good!

While it’s not an FM machine, it’s voicings and waveforms (and colour scheme!) were clearly derived from the brand new DX range. As it result, it sounded afresh, and looked fabulous!

Not only that, but alongside the preset drum patterns you had a programmable drum machine - yes, for perhaps the first time in a home keyboard you could write your own drum patterns!

DM307’s samples are derived from modular synth drums, live percussion and classic analogue drum machines. In total, the library contains 7.5GB of uncompressed samples (although this only uses 4.8GB of hard-drive space with NI’s lossless compression) with more than 3600 samples spread across 1500 plus presets.

The library is a download-only product and will work quite happily with the free version of Kontakt Player or, as I used for the review, the full version of Kontakt 5. Installation and authentication follows standard practice for Kontakt and I had no problems with any of these steps.

While DM307 is built upon this extensive collection of loops and single-hit samples, it is various preset structures and the Kontakt-based sound manipulation tools that go a long way to defining what the instrument is about. I’ll come to the Kontakt interface in a minute, but let’s start with the library structure.

THE JD-8OO
is Roland's answer to half a decade of hard-to-program synthesizers. Covered in sliders that act as dedicated editors just like a classic analog synth, the JD-800 is an extremely programmable and hands-on digital synthesizer. It is also an interesting and great sounding digital synth with incredible flexibility and control. Internal ROM based waveforms are combined to build your sounds. The sounds are based on Roland's D-50, but updated for the nineties with multimode filters - uncommon but welcome at the time (source Vintage Synth Explorer).

GET READY
to immerse yourself into the massive sounds of one of the most iconic and legendary synthesizers from the nineties in a Kontakt instrument. Contains inspiring arpeggios, lush pads, fat basses, screaming leads and pearcing synth sounds in any combination. Sampled in 44.100 Hz 24 Bit stereo for a very clear sound.

THE SOUNDS
were recreated in Kontakt with the help of the Kontakt effects, filters and modulators. And with the addition of an arpeggiator, even more sound possibilities are available. An instruments exists out of two layers that can be switched on and off and edited seperately. Multis exist out of several Instruments combined together to get huge layered sounds. JD-850 is divided into 12 different sound categories, containig 200 instruments (nki's) and 50 multi's (nkm's). The sound categories are: Arpeggios, Atmospheric, Bass, Brass, Keys, Leads, Pads, Percussive, Plucked, Strings, Synths and Winds.
Wave Alchemy Mutate KONTAKT Wave Alchemy Mutate KONTAKT
Introducing Mutate, our next generation virtual hybrid synthesizer for Kontakt 5!

Twist, mangle and transform unique multi-sampled waveforms to create powerful abstract Dubstep bass, twisted Techno sequences, morphing growls, Mainroom EDM bass / leads, cone-melting subs, lush chords, warm analogue bass and everything in-between...

Combine complex evolving tones and ‘mutate’ them into oblivion with powerful parameter lock sequencers and extensive on-board processing / FX...

Mutate is powered by a 3.7GB core library of unique raw waveforms and pre-designed preset multi-samples, synthesized from the ground up, and recorded directly from a huge hybrid analogue / digital Eurorack modular synth system. In essence this means that as a producer, sound designer or programmer you have access to a truly diverse tapestry of creative sounds and building blocks, before you have even touched Mutate’s creative on-board parameters!

We feel that the raw, vibrant tones of Mutate are an essential addition to any electronic music producer's toolkit...

Please note: This instrument does NOT work with the Free Kontakt Player. A full version of Native Instruments Kontakt 5.2.1 (or above) is required to run Mutate.

Mutate ships with two separate instruments; the 'Raw Waveforms' instrument and the 'Designed Presets' Instrument.

Raw Waveforms Instrument
The 'Raw Waveforms' instrument is powered by 2730 multi-samples spread across 46 waveform patches. Up to four oscillators (plus noise oscillator) can be mixed, panned and tuned to create unique layered, synthesized sounds.

Designed Presets Instrument
The 'Designed Preset' Instrument is powered by 6305 perfectly looped multi-samples, spread across 142 expressive, evolving patches which are ready to use straight out of the box; with filter settings, modulation, and envelope settings recorded straight from the modular Eurorack system.

Both instruments feature Sequencer and FX edit pages;

Sequencer Page
At the heart of Mutate you will find a 32-step, 16 track, variable rate ‘parameter lock’ sequencer, allowing you to automate; note pitch, volume, note length, attack, filter cut-off, filter resonance, filter LFO depth, Filter LFO rate, stereo spread, distortion levels, reverb send and delay send individually, per step! When used with the instruments ‘shuffle’ function, anything from subtle sample and hold type effects to completely insane, morphing sequences can be created. This is where things get really interesting!

FX Page
The FX page has selectable modulation effects (switchable between Flanger, Phaser and Chorus) alongside a custom Reverb and Delay unit

Mutate was driven by the desire to create a truly unique ‘Bass Machine’ synth capable of twisting waveforms 'inside-out' using extensive modulation and sequencer parameter lock techniques.

From the start it was our mission to push Kontakt’s scripting capabilities to the limit, to deliver a synth with an experimental edge, capable of devastating, evolving sounds for the bass heads.
